Printing Printables: Paper Choice and Colour Tips for Better Results
Share
The same PDF can look quite different depending on the paper and printer you use. These simple tips help you get cleaner, more consistent results from planners, invitations, templates and wall art.
Choose paper to match the project
- Planners, trackers and worksheets: standard or slightly heavier plain paper works well. Pick a weight that does not show writing through the back if you use pens or markers.
- Invitations and cards: use cardstock or thick matte paper so they feel sturdy and hold their shape.
- Wall art: matte or photo paper in a heavier weight looks best in a frame.
Tell your printer what paper you are using
Most printers have a paper type setting such as plain, matte, photo or cardstock. Selecting the right one changes how much ink is used and how long it dries, which affects colour and sharpness.
Print at the highest quality that makes sense
Choose the best or high-quality mode for anything you plan to display or give away. Use a standard mode for everyday pages like checklists, where perfect colour is not important.
Print at actual size
In the print dialog choose Actual size or 100%. "Fit to page" can shrink the design and leave unexpected margins, which matters for invitations, cards and framed prints.
Expect small colour differences
Screens glow and paper reflects, so colours never match perfectly. Your printer, ink, paper and screen settings all play a part. Print one test page before you print a full batch, and adjust your settings if the result is too dark or too light.
Keep your printer healthy
If you see streaks or faded areas, run your printer's nozzle check or cleaning cycle and make sure ink levels are not low. This fixes many quality problems before you waste good paper.
Not happy with your home printer?
A local print shop or an online print service can print your PDF on professional paper in larger sizes. Bring the file on a USB drive or send it by email and ask which paper finishes they offer.
